The Animals are the group of main protagonists in Over the Hedge (film). The group consists of animals foraging food from Suburbia, led by Verne and later RJ as well. They look like friends, but are more like a family. According to Verne, "That's what families do; they been looking out for each other". This group has a raccoon, a turtle, a squirrel, a skunk, a father-daughter opossum pair and a porcupine couple with 3 children.

Verne is a naturally tentative ornate box turtle and the leader of the foragers. He has his own ways of doing the daily tasks that keeps everybody safe, but his world is turned upside-down when RJ introduces his chaotic lifestyle into the mix. Though Verne genuinely cares for his family, he tends to be patronizing towards them and sees them as being more naïve than him. Much of the movie is focused on his conflict with RJ. Verne is voiced by the late Garry Shandling.

- Tiger is a Persian cat who joins the family at the end of the movie.
- RJ always calls Hammy by different variations of his name, such as Hamilton and Hamsquad.
- Stella never calls RJ by his name, instead she calls him "Raccoon", referencing what type of animal he is.
- There is no information about the origins of Verne, Stella or Hammy.
- Running Gags: Everyone calls Verne an amphibian and he corrects them with reptile. Although Dwayne LaFontant already knew he was a reptile, but first mistook him as an amphibian.
